Situated in Bryanston, Johannesburg, Forest Farm is a residential care facility for adults of all colours and creeds who have Cerebral Palsy. Founded by parents of children with Cerebral Palsy in the late 1960s, Forest Farm has evolved over the decades, and currently offers 24/7 care to well over 100 residents with varying degrees of this debilitating condition. The land and buildings used by Forest Farm are owned by the Cerebral Palsy Association (CPA).
Some residents live in communal cottages while others who require more assistance with daily living tasks, reside in an area called The Haven. Residents who are able, work in the Forest Farm Workshop, where several items are assembled. The Workshop is also open for day care. It operates from 08h30 to 15h00 from Monday to Friday. Since people with cerebral palsy with physical and cognitive disabilities cannot work in the open labor market, the Workshop offers them an opportunity to experience some of the benefits of having a job. These include having a routine, feeling responsible because of their contribution and also a sense of achievement when they meet their targets. The day attendees are included in all the social activities and outings offered at the Centre.
All residents are encouraged to participate in art and music therapy as well as physiotherapy. At Forest Farm we believe variety is the spice of life, and welcome performances by singers and entertainers. We enjoy a good get-together and celebrate birthdays in style! Outings are arranged to nature reserves, bird parks, dams and more. We also believe in blessing those less fortunate than ourselves, and regularly have outreaches to old age homes and less-privileged communities. This is, after all, what life really is about.
At Forest Farm, our values are shared by our hand-picked staff. We operate with integrity. It’s part of our moral fibre. We treat each other with respect; we don’t talk down to each other. We pride ourselves on being people-centred. We see our profession as a calling … one which requires us to communicate clearly and to listen with great care. We are transparent in all our activities here at Forest Farm. We are independently audited and wouldn’t have it any other way. We hold ourselves accountable for good governance, and our credible track record speaks for itself in this regard.
An elected committee manages the affairs of Forest Farm. All members serve in a voluntary capacity. Current committee members are Mr Richard Dixon (Chairman), Mr Hans van Manen (Vice Chairman), Mrs Linda Finlayson (Treasurer), Mr Wayne de Nobrega, Dr Thuto Nkobi, Dr Marius de Beer and Mrs Elizabeth Deppe.
The committee is supported by a professional management team, which consists of Operations Director Drienie Nienaber, an accredited Life Coach and NLP Practitioner; Medical Manager, Sister Elize Kaltwasser, and Operations Manager, Hans Pater. Drienie is an accredited Life Coach and NLP Practitioner. Hans enjoys combining his extensive background in business with his hands-on management style, all while striving to help residents add purpose to their lives. We’re like-minded and have the Forest Farm values in common.
We invite you to walk alongside us. Get to know our people. Become involved in any way you can. The reward is a sense of contentment and personal enrichment. Forest Farm looks forward to meeting you!
